Take the Alberta accent challenge!

Listen to each set of voice samples and try to identify the Albertan.

A few hints to get you started:
-The word 'man' is more nasal in Ontario than in Alberta (closer to "may-ann.")

  • In Alberta, the vowel in 'bag' will sound more like "bayg" (almost rhyming with 'vague.')
  • In Ontario, the word 'car' is brighter and further to the front of the mouth (more like "kerr.") Albertans enunciate the word further back, emphasizing the "ar," rather than the "r".
  • Ontarians pronounce 'house' further forward in the mouth (more like "hoose.") In Alberta, the sound is further back (more like "hoase.")
